When your blog post ideas seem to run dry, is your first inclination to feel resigned to having nothing meaningful to say?
What if you could re-ignite your blog ideas and share them powerfully, every single time you put fingers to keyboard?
It’s time to stop being boring.
In the following five posts, I’m going to share with you 5 key themes that will help spark your creativity and self-expression, give you a thirst for sharing your thoughts and share meaningfully and powerfully. Are you in?
The first theme I want to explore is being heartwarming. There’s a reason we like feel-good stories, cute puppies and videos of giggling triplets. They pull at our heartstrings and remind us that innocence, joy and good exist in this often brutal world.
Even the driest topics can be turned into heartwarming blog posts. Below I’m going to share with you some ways to infuse heartwarming stories into your posts.
#1 Aim for Inspiration
The tone you want to go for in a heartwarming post is “inspirational”. If you are aiming to inspire the reader, you will want to show them how to overcome obstacles through stories and examples. Your stories will highlight the hero’s journey, a storytelling framework identified by Joseph Campbell in the 20th Century.
The hero’s journey takes the reader on a quest which is sparked by a disruptive event in the hero’s life. The hero faces tragedy or catastrophe, betrayal, experiences obstacles, tries and fails, all but gives up, finds mentors, battles their internal dialogue, finds and loses friends, breaks through, overcomes the odds and returns to a new normal existence. The hero is transformed by the experience. Virtually every successful movie is based on the hero’s journey archetype. Think Lord of the Rings.
#2 Create Posts That Lend Themselves to Stories
Types of posts that lend themselves towards being heartwarming can include:
- Case studies: No holds barred stories about a struggle in relation to adopting a new practice, product or idea. People don’t just want to read what went well. They want the dirt, the struggle and the angst. Give it to them.
- Inspirational/Motivational Posts: Sharing your personal story, whether as a cautionary tale (where you’re sharing what not to do based on a negative outcome you experienced) or a hero’s journey.
- Gift Guides: Gift guides that are themed around annual holidays can be truly heartwarming as their focus is on how to uplift someone else. Gift guides can be written for Valentines Day, Christmas, Mother’s Day etc.
- Opinion pieces: Share a “what if” scenario. How do you want the world to be? Sharing an alternate reality you envision can be powerful and heartwarming. Share your purpose or your vision to show the world why you care about an issue.
#Aim for Why over What
How-to posts are a dime a dozen. There’s definitely a place for them but if you only create posts that tell people how to do something and you’re not inspiring them to breakthrough their internal dialogue that’s stopping them from doing the thing, then it’s a waste of words. Engaging your reader in why it should matter to them is way more important. For instance, it’s all well and good for me to share these tips with you, but what will get you over the bridge from inaction to action is not the tips, but me persuading you to see why it matters.
Here’s Why It Matters
If you could make every post you create heartwarming, your content will be read. You will inspire people to take action and you will feel encouraged that you have something meaningful to say.
In fact, yesterday I wrote a social media post that was a heartwarming (and true) story and immediately it inspired a reader to take action. That left me feeling moved and motivated to share more stories.
It’s easy to become cynical about content creation and blogging, but I want to encourage you to try some different approaches and share from the heart. And if you need extra inspiration and guidance, just jump into the Writally Facebook Community. No comment or question is left behind.
